Types of Braces

Metal Braces

Iconix Aesthetic Braces

Private patients also have the option of choosing white gold coloured brackets, which blend in well with the teeth and are a little less obvious that traditional metallic braces. These brackets truly offer the best of both worlds – the durability of stainless steel and the aesthetics of “white” gold.

A unique proprietary ion-implementation process ensures these brackets will stay retain their “champagne” colour for the duration of treatment.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces have brackets made of porcelain that can match the colour of the teeth. Essentially they work in the same way as metallic fixed braces but are less visible. These braces are more often used on upper teeth than lowers and can give excellent results. A variety of different ceramic braces are used in the Exeter Orthodontic Practice but these braces are not available on the NHS.

Invisalign - Clear Positioners

“Invisalign” treatment consists of a series of thin, clear removable aligners (also called positioners) that are worn over the teeth for one to two weeks at a time. These aligners apply gentle pressure on the teeth to move them into the desired position; each is worn for two weeks before moving onto the next one. As they are removable, the aligners can be taken out for eating and cleaning but must be worn for approximately 22 hours a day if treatment is to be successful.

The number of aligners that have to be worn will vary according to the type of tooth movements to be carried out. The price will vary according to the difficulty of the bite problem to be treated and this will be explained at the outset.

As useful feature of the “Invisalign” system is the “ClinCheck”, where proposed treatments can be viewed on screen as a virtual computer animation to give both the orthodontist and patient an idea of the treatment outcome.

It should be said that “Invisalign” gives best results when used for milder orthodontic problems.

Incognito - Lingual Treatment

In some cases it is possible to use braces glued to the inside surfaces of the teeth so that they are completely hidden from view, these are called lingual braces. The preferred system at the Exeter Orthodontic Practice is called “Incognito”, which consists of individually customized gold metal brackets that are custom engineered in Germany for each patient individually.  These braces are considerably more expensive than conventional ones and not every patient is suitable for this technique. Your orthodontist will advise you if “Incognito” is right for you.

Sometimes, it can be possible to use simpler, less expensive lingual braces, please ask for details.
